About this The character of Surrealism had been crystallizing over
_ . the previous five years when, in 1924, Andre Breton's
DOOK Manifeste du Surréalisme defined the word. Its exhibitions
and other events seemed to the uninitiated just as strange
and discordant as those of Dada; but Surrealism had a less
desperate air about it; and it belonged to a time of euphoria
and extravagance.
As conceived in those early days it was not so much a
formal movement as a spiritual orientation, embracing
ethics and politics as well as the arts. Recourse to dreams, to
the unconscious, to chance factors, to automatism dictated
the Surrealist mode.

Magritte, Salvador Dali, Paul Delvaux, Yves Tanguy are
a few who reflect the preoccupations of Surrealism.
The collection of key documents, in addition to Andre
Breton's manifestoes, include Paul Eluard, Food for Vision;
Salvador Dali, Conquest of the Irrational; Max Ernst,
Beyond Painting; and articles from La Revolution Sur-
réaliste. Patrick Waldberg prefaces these with a conspectus
of Surrealism from its beginnings to the present time.
Patrick Waldberg was born in 1913 in Santa Monica, California. He was
educated in France and for ten years was a member of the
Surrealist movement. He later withdrew to some extent to 5
become an observer and historian of the group's activities.
. . He is a poet and bomme de lettres, and a close friend of
Max Ernst, Andre Breton and other Surrealists. His bio-
graphy of Max Ernst which was published in 1958 will be
followed by a study of the great Belgian Surrealist painter,
Rene Magritte.
