SURREALISM
Surrealism is a term often wrongly applied to the whole of modern painting. In fact, painting is one of the less important fields of Surrealism, which uses poetry, fJms, and photography to express its view of life. This view, which stems from and reflects the disruptions of war, tries to reconstitute the famiL'ar, recognisable objects of the everyday world into an illogical dream-world, the world of the subconscious. Among the well-known Surrealist painters whose work is shown in this volume are Max Ernst, Chagall, Miro, and Salvador Dali.
