It ineludes works which first appeared in Longman Linguistics Library and the English Language Series as well as new titlcs being published simultaneously in cased and paperback editions.
This book is comparable, in level and scope, with Geoffrey Lccch's earlier book in the English Language Series, A Linguistic Guide to English Poetry, and may indeed be regarded as.a companion volume to it, taking not poetic style but prose style as its subject matter.
The authors show the student of English (whether his primary interest is in language or literature) how the two poles of English studies — linguistic analysis and literary appreciation — can be interrclatcd, and illuminated, through the linguistic study of literary style.
