Studies on the History of the
Hungarian Working-Class
Movement (1867-1966)
Edited by H. Vass
From the end of the last century,
the labour movement has been a
most important factor in the devel-
opment of Hungarian society. In
1918-19, and after 1945, its role
became decisive. The studies in this
volume, the first of its kind to appear
in English, might thus well be of
interest to the foreign reader in a
number of respects. For, besides

Studies on the History of the

Edited by H. Vass
From the end of the last century,
the labour movement has been a
most important factor in the devel-
opment of Hungarian society. In
1918-19, and after 1945, its role
became decisive. The studies in this
volume, the first of its kind to appear

interest to the foreign reader in a

aspects of the history of the Hun-
garian labour movement, they also
deal with its most important prob-
lems, as well as with its historio-
graphy.
A major feature of this volume is the
variety of the subjects of which it
treats. It clearly reflects the fact
that contemporary Hungarian histo-
riography is by no means an uncrit-
ical survey of the history of the
communist party and of the revo-
lutionary working-class movement,
but rather, a presentation of the full
complexity of the movement's devel-
opment. The authors of the studies
view the Hungarian workers' move-
ment as part of the organic unity of
the nation's history. In stepping
beyond the borders of Hungary,
they also reveal the significance of
the internationalism of the labour
movement which has enabled the
Hungarian working class to fulfill
its historic mission.
