This volume contains 15 studies mainly from the field of syntax. Only a few deal with topics of semantics, phonetics, and applied linguistics. For the most part those topics of syntax have been analyzed where differences between the structures of English and Hungarian can cause difficulty for acquisition in either direction primarily because of mother tongue interference. Therefore several studies analyze non-finite structures, subclauses and causatives; four studies deal with the problems of word order and word stress. The articles on semantics examine the range of the semantic fields of English and Hungarian lexicon, e.g., space adjectives, kinship terms, and names of bodyparts. One of the studies offers a contrastive analysis of the English Past Perfect and its Hungarian equivalents and draws the methodological implications illustrating the teaching problems of verb aspects. The contrastive analysis is approached from a practical side in an article containing an error analysis of a large corpus. This analysis offers a test for the hypotheses contained in most of the theoretical papers.
These studies are written not only for linguists but also for teachers and writers of English textbooks. While the volume could not attain completeness, it does establish the basis for the preparation of a pedagogical grammar.
