Coverage includes applications of new code provisions for such situations as combined torsion and shear design; two-way slab design for flat plates and slabs, waffle flat slabs, and slabs with beams; and utilizing new methods for crack control in one-way slab and joist systems, beams and girders, and two-way slabs. Written to complement the ACI Code and Commentary, the book presents time-saving solutions to torsional stiffness, braced and unbraced slender columns with and without sideway, and reinforcing details for economy in design, detailing, fabricating, field erection and inspection. Here also are sample deflection computations, as well as methods for wall and splice design, empirical and strength design, and development of reinforcement. The book further saves time and effort by pointing out obsolete ASTM specifications; providing help in eliminating anchorage, development and splice calculations; and comparing wall versus column economy.

About the authors . . .
Having been with the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute since 1958, Paul F. Rice is currently Vice President, Engineering. His duties encompass supervising the publication of five industry-service books, including CRSI Design Handbooks. He respresents CRSI on the concrete industry's foremost technical committees, including ASTM, AWS, and the building code, sanitary structures, and detailing committees of ACI. A former Technical Director of ACI, Mr. Rice's other experience includes service with the Portland Cement Association as a district structural engineer; estimator-designer; concrete testing and field inspector; and supervisor of airfield paving and building construction.
A Principal and Vice President of Klein and Hoffman, Inc., Consulting Engineers, Edward S. Hoffman was previously Chief Structural Engineer of the Engineers Collaborative Ltd., and has had extensive experience in the structural design of all types of reinforced concrete structures. He co-authored the Structural Design Guide to the A ISC Specifications and has also contributed numerous articles to leading technical journals. Mr. Hoffman is a Lecturer in Structural Engineering at the University of Illinois' College of Architecture. He is also a member of the building code and detailing committees of ACI, The Chicago Committee on High-Rise Buildings, and other professional organizations.
