When Mr.Kubly left
Italy after fourteen months of travelling
round the country, from Piedmont in the
north to Sicily in the south, drinking in her
beauty and poverty and warm-heartedness
and gaiety and unhappiness, he found that
he no longer thought wholly as an Ameri-

Mr. Kubly went first to Rome, as was
proper—the Holy City in a Holy Year,
crowded with devout pilgrims from all over
the Catholic world. Then there was Milan,
where he sat in the royal box at La Scala;
Siena, during the horse races; Florence,
in the midst of the political campaign
of 1951; carnival time at Viareggio; Pisa,
marked with the dreadful desolation of
war; the strange town of Lucca, which
gives an impression of dark mediaevalism
and yet is really modern and prosperous;
San Gemignano of the many towers and a
