LINDE WAIDI-IOI-ER uses her camcra to probe the depths of her feelings for the surprising sandstone skin of the American West, to share her passion for this surreal country, to explore and reveal and praise a parallel universe of stone, sand, space and silence. Few have photographed the high desert with the intensity and patience that Linde has brought to a decade of
wilderness photography. She offers us a new vision of
the sandstone southwest, strong, simple and graphic, to match the strong, simple, bare-bones landscapes of
Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and the Colorado Plateau.
An intense emotional response to the strangest, least
familiar landforms in North America.
Linde lives beneath the Sangre de Cristo mountains, just

previous books with Western Eye Press, High Color and Red Rock, Blue Sky. Assignment work has taken her around the globe, from Alaska to...

LiTO TEIADA-FLORES is a poet, designer and outdoor adventure writer, known for his books on skiing, ski-mountaineering and kayaking. He has
collaborated with Linde Waidhofer on her earlier books,
shared most of her wilderness photo adventures and, like her, is madly in love with the high desert and the sculptured sandstone spaces of the Colorado Plateau.

STONE & SILENCE explores the paradox of the sandstone southwest. How can such empty land be so full? How can so much silence speak so eloquently?
Rocks always balanced on the edge of something: a river, a gorge, a canyon, an eroded plateau. Ledges suspended above ledges, canyons cut by other canyons, 'buttes stacked on top of buttes, rock giving birth to rock. Warm light dripping its honey down red rock
walls.
The sandstone structure of Linde Waidhofer's dream-
like southwest is a shifting illusion of solid form, eroded by infrequent raindrops, frequent wind. The images of this book draw us deep into a sandy and secret planet: sandstone formations worn, smoothed, ^ polished, broken off and scattered; sandcastles ¦ I substantial enough to believe in, to climb on; gargoyles strange enough to doubt, to blink and look again, and again.
