'Landscape Modeling' covers a broad range of activities, ranging from accurate scale models, produced either with analog physical materials or with digital 3D modeling software tools, to abstract mathematical simulations ranging in scale from whole ecosystems and watersheds to particles of soil and droplets of water Developments in computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and web-communications, as well as insights from landscape ecology and community planning all feed the enterprise of "knowledge-based landscape modeling", as planers, designers, scientists and researchers attempt both to describe and analyze the world we live in, and also to convey visions and plans for the world of tomorrow. The diverse kinds of knowledge and modes of representation required in these endeavors, including both specific examples and more general observations, are the subject of this volume.
