A History of Cultural Reawakening
Each and every cultural group has a spiritual heritage which is naturally — or innately — linked to it. This spiritual heritage can be denied or coerced into the unconscious— as, for example, when that culture has imposed upon it an exotic creed or philosophy. However, the traits deeply etched in the genetic, linguistic and traditional codés of a given culture persistently remain and can never be totally eliminated. In fact, the rediscovery and reawakening of such submerged cultural features is a key to the revitahzation and harmonization of individuals and society. One need only look to the astounding accomplishments of the Renaissance in 15th century Italy to see .how this can work. Such awakenings never meet with a friendly reception, however, and so their histories are often ultimately tragic and bloody. This is the story of the medieval dimming of the vital ancient Germanic spirituality and the phases of its gradual reawa ning.

Beginning with the advent of the establishment of Christianity in northern Europe, a phrase and an attitude began to become prevalent in intellectual life — ex oriente lux — the light comes from the east. This becomes a phrase which Europeans would come to understand as: meaningfulness comes from the outside, from an exotic source. The ancient seat of the highest form of spirituality was in the north (this even comes to be so understood in medieval Christian mysticism). Therefore, those who are interested in penetrating to the deepest mystery of self and of culture must modify this old formula to: e septentriomhus lux — from the North comes the light. This is an eternal light which, for all who seek it, heralds the Northern Dawn.
