HITLER
Adolf Hitler, the tyrant whose brutal dictatorship was directly responsible for the deaths of .millions, was born into a lower middle class ¦family in the provincial Austrian town of Braunau am Inn on 20 April 1889. HITLER
Adolf Hitler, the tyrant whose brutal dictatorship was directly responsible for the deaths of .millions, was born into a lower middle class ¦family in the provincial Austrian town of Braunau am Inn on 20 April 1889. In early adulthood Hitler drifted from job to job, often selling crude paintings of Viennesse landmarks to make ends meet. World War I brought about a dramatic change in Hitler's life. The army seems to have agreed with him and he was twice decorated for bravery. Defeat in 1918 and the Treaty of VersaiUes left Hitler believing that Germany and its people had been betrayed by self-serving and corrupt politicians. He settled in Munich after the war and joined a moribund political party which his dynamism transformed. It became the National Socialist German Workers Party, the Nazi Party. Following the failed Putsch of 1923 and a speU in jail, Hitler regrouped his party and began his climb to power through the ballot box. In 1933 the Nazis assumed the mantle of government with Hitler as their Chancellor.
Hitler then moved swiftly to consolidate his position, stifling dissent, outlawing other political parties and trade unions, and creating concentration camps for 'undesirables.' Secure in Germany, Hitler initiated his expansionist policies in Europe backed by the rapidly expanded armed forces. Victories in Poland, France and the Low Countries and the Balkans between 1939 and 1941 were the Third Reich's military high points, but the attack on the Soviet Union in summer 1941 heralded the beginning of the end. In May 1945 with much of Germany in ruins, Hitler committed suicide, ending the Nazis' hopes of a '1000-Year Reich.'
Hitler looks at the greatest monster of the twentieth century and follows his rise from provincial obscurity to his creation of the Third Reich and ultimate demise in the rubble of Berlin. Profusely illustrated with over 100 photographs, it is a factual and compelling account of the most notorious figure in modern history. Vissza
