Fülszöveg

The process of arriving at statistically usable numbers by adjusting observational data stands at the heart of all practical work involving statistics. This book describes various procedures whereby that statistical adjustment can be performed, and it does so from the all-important point of view of the man in the field. The author was in government service with the Department of Agriculture and with the Bureau of the Census for 22 years, and has been a consultant in industry for 16 years. The procedures in this book were developed and used in many types of problems in his experience. The first section of the book, covering simple adjustments and including a series of illustrations of curve fitting, is an introduction to basic statistical concepts and to the concept of "adjustment." The second part is devoted to solution by least squares of more complicated problems and takes into account the propagation of error and the generál problem of least squares, while the next two sections... The first section of the book, covering simple adjustments and including a series of illustrations of curve fitting, is an introduction to basic statistical concepts and to the concept of "adjustment." The second part is devoted to solution by least squares of more complicated problems and takes into account the propagation of error and the generál problem of least squares, while the next two sections cover conditions with and without parameters. The final part of the book provides 26 exercises on fitting various functions (the line, parabola, generalized hyperbola and its logarithmic form, etc.), giving the reader both a compendium of results, handy for reference, and the practice that he might need in forming and solving normál equations. A final section contains 4 additional examples on curve fitting. Except in his development of the generál theory (which is not essential to the application of recommended procedures or the interpretation of the results), in which he uses somé differential calculus, Dr. Deming holds the mathematics in the book to an intermediate level or lower. Furthermore, all procedures are presented in such a way as to be immediately adaptable to many kinds of problems met in practice. Thus, students and teachers find this book useful as a classroom text, while practicing statisticians find the inclusion of all this material within a single text extremely valuable. The appendix contains tables for making random observations for class illustration: Normál Deviates Directly in Units of the Standard Error; Normál Distribution of the Numbers from 0000 to 9999 with a Class Interval of .2a. Corrected, unabridged reprint of first edition. Authors Preface. Appendix. Index x + 261pp. 53/8 x 8V%. Paperbound. A DOVER EDITION DESIGNED FOR YEARS OF USE! We have made every effort to make this the best book possible. Our paper is opaque, with minimai show-through; it will not discolor or become brittle with age. Pages are sewn in signatures, in the method traditionally used for the best books, and will not drop out, as often happens with paperbacks held together with glue. Books open fiat for easy reference. The binding will not crack or split. This is a permanent book. Vissza
