ave Olsen is senior vice president of coffee for Starbucks. When he opened an espresso bar in Seattle's University District in the mid-1970s, his search for the perfect espresso led him to Starbucks, a small local coffee roaster. Together, Olsen and Starbucks formulated the Starbucks proprietary Espresso Roast—the same blend customers enjoy today. When Starbucks chairman and ceo Howard Schultz acquired the company in 1987, Olsen became responsible for traveling the world, developing relationships with growers and brokers, and buying the best coffee beans he could find.
