SLOVENIA
Slovenia, one of the many newly independent states
to emerge at the close of the twentieth century, is
among the most beautiful small countries of Europe.
Bordering on Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and
the Adriatic Sea, it combines in its small area the
diverse charms of the Alps and the Mediterranean,
the unique landscapes of the Karst, and the gentle
vine-clad hills and Pannonian lowlands of the east-
ern region. Medieval towns and castles, baroque
churches and picturesque villages dot the verdant
valleys and hill-tops; charming old fishing ports
bask in the Adriatic sun. Though numbering only
about two million even today, the Slovenes have
managed to preserve their language and cultural
identity through a millennium of foreign rule, most-
ly as part of the Austrian Empire. Following the dis-
integration of Yugoslavia, the country is restructur-
ing its post-communist economy, in which foreign
