SLOVENIA
Slovenia, one of the many newly independent states
to emerge at the close of the twentieth century, is
among the most beautiful small countries of Europe.
Bordering on Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and
the Adriatic Sea, it combines in its small area the
diverse charms of the Alps and the Mediterranean,
the unique landscapes of the Karst, and the gentle
vine-clad hills and Pannonian lowlands of the east-

churches and picturesque villages dot the verdant
