Baruch Spinoza, 'the philosopher's philosopher', was also an active scientist - an experimentalist and a theorist of scientific method. These latter aspects of his life have, however, previously received scant attention. The articles collected in this book reflect the whole range of issues suggested by its title: from the concrete treatment of Spinoza's experiments and findings, to the abstract account of his philosophy of science; from the applications of his scientific method in subjects so seemingly diverse as optics and Bible study, to the theoretical questioning of that scientific method itself; from his associations with eminent scientists in 17th century Holland, to his relation to such eminent names as Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr. While some of the authors provide philosophical critiques of the central tenets of Spinoza's epistemology, others offer textual analysis of passages not previously recognized as bearing on Spinoza's relation to the sciences. Still others present results of scholarly investigations of archives formerly unknown to Spinozists and of enormous historical and biographical interest. Several of the papers were presented at the Sesquitercentenary Symposium, 'Spinoza and the Sciences' of the Boston Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science.
