SOTHEBY'S
Art at Auction 1989-90
Edited by Sally Prideaux
Art at Auction continues to reflect the range and quality of works of art sold at Sotheby's with articles by specialists detailing the year's highhghts. Nicholas Wadley recalls the critical reception in 1877 of Renoir's Au Moutin de la Galelle, hailed as 'an afternoon in Montmartre captured for posterity'. This image of contemporary Paris at leisure is now one of the major landmarks of Impressionism.
Two major collections auctioned in New York and Monte Carlo covered almost every collecting field imaginable; Nicholas Rayner, ofSotheby's, reveals the magic of the magnificent jewels of the late Count and Countess Guy du Boisrouvray while the collection of John T. Dorrance, Jr is reviewed as a whole.
An exceptional group of drawings describing the life of Taddeo Zuccaro, by his brother Federico Zuccaro is examined by J. A. Gere, the leading authority on the artist. The season also saw the discovery of two watercolours... Tovább

The season also saw the discovery of two watercolours by Thomas Girtin, found hidden in a linen chest, and a Prague bronze of the Dancing Faun by Adrien de Vries, discovered and identified in London after standing in an English garden for forty years. The work of Adrien de Vries is discussed by the authority on the artist, Lars O. Larsson, senior professor of the Institute of Art History at the University of Kiel.
The emergence of a wonderful Arabic manuscript illustrated with mythical beasts has initiated new research in the field. Two scholars, Stefano Carboni and Anna Contadini, measure its significance and bring out some interesting comparisons with other bestiaries and Islamic metalwork. Three extensive collections of books are examined by specialists from Sotheby's - The Garden Ltd Collection featuring some 300 books and manuscripts illustrating peaks in the history of ideas; remarkable examples of early fifteenth-and sixteenth-century printing gathered by the designer and typographer George Abrams, and the library of Henry M. Blackmer II which documented the broad history of the Ottoman empire up to the creation of the modern Turkish state.
These 464 pages provide an invaluable full-colour record of memorable events in the salerooms worldwide, from the glamour of the sale of the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO to the mystery and romanticism of the extraordinary sale in London of Crimean wine from Massandra, once the private cellar ofTsar Nicholas IL Vissza
