SOTHEBY'S
Art at Auction 1988-89
Edited by Sally Liddell
Art al Auction 1988-89 witnesses Sotheby's continued success in the field of contemporary art with Roberta Bernstein's article on False Start, a pivotal work by Jasper Johns which established a new record for the work ofa living artist.
Paintings from the collections of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr; Mr and Mrs Victor W. Ganz and Jaime Ortiz-Patino were auctioned in New York. This season also saw the sale of the first parts of the library ofH. Bradley Martin and illuminated manuscripts from the eleventh and final part of the collection formed by the late Major J.R. Abbey. Objects rarely seen at auction appeared in the salerooms; these exciting works of art included an Early Cycladic marble head, a large Qur'an leaf measuring almost 6ft in height and an autograph manuscript of Kafka's The Trial. Art al Auction features a late-sixteenth-century Florentine marble bust of Christ which had been missing for a century. Herbert Keutner idendfied Giovanni Caccini as the author of the bust and here reviews this and other works by Caccini.
During the winter the galleries were open for the National Art-Collections Fund loan exhibition, 'Monet to Freud'. This was held to launch the Modern Art Fund, designed to raise funds solely for the purchase of modern art executed after 1930. The exhibition is reviewed in Art al Auction by Richard Cork.
The season ended on a lighter note with the sale of more than 500 eels from the Academy-award winning film Who framed Roger Rabbit.
These 464 pages of informative texts and full-colour illustrations provide an interesUng record of the varied events which took place in the salerooms this year. Vissza
