"Civitas fidelissima" - Sopron is Hungary's most loyal city. It's Gate of Loyalty stands open to one and all and it's Gate of Freedom has bars made of diamonds from which no-one wishes to escape. They symbolise togetherness, interdependance and beauty.
Sopron is a very old city, people have lived in this region for many thousands of years. The city is history personified, its centre a veritable open-air museum.
Times long past hold the secrets of centuries. András Szebeni takes us through the common secrets and points to things moving and unmoving, the source of eternity and history and transforms modern reality into a timeless wonder.

A city is identified by its "places". The visitor first just looks then sees. Pictures prefer the seer not the looker. I don't want to see like a reporter. I am not interested in topicai subjects. Everyday life is much more disturbing. The events such as when the Minister visits Sopron, opens this and that, rewards and buries him or her is not reality. What I am interested in is "path-finding"; the print, the breath of a city or an era: the disappearing eternity.

Literature and Photography are identical twins. They both convey the most condensed information of the world. Photography deconstructs and constructs, literature constructs and deconstructs. Especially when one's gazé is directed, and who could direct it better than those two most sensitive "spiritual crafts"; the winged knights of photography and literature. The virgin eye need to be deflorated. The condition is that both gentlemen should be cross-eyed. Just like El Greco, the brilliant Greek was. The man who can walk about in a known but not overly-known city that can treat commonplaces like a plastic surgeon, who can go from Budapest to Sopron without any pain and by his photos transforms every well-photographed and well-documented building, street and park into a noble silver nitráté painting and a piece of prose-poetry.
