Modern statistics, which has found its way into virtually every field, would be impossible without sampling techniques. The purpose of this book is to make such techniques understandable and useable, not only by statisticians and mathematicians, but alsó by social scientists, industrial managers, and natural scientists who find statistics increasingly important in their work and studies. Only college algebra is assumed. The opening chapters provide backgrounds in the planning of surveys and in avoiding the errors surveys are heir to. Such consideration of the practical problems that arise in the undertaking of surveys is not readily found elsewhere. Then come sections on somé elementary theory for design, somé theory for analysis and estimation of precision, applications, and somé further theory for design and analysis. Illustrated with dozens of actual large-scale surveys in government and industry (population studies, business censuses, etc.) and with material designed to bridge... Tovább

Illustrated with dozens of actual large-scale surveys in government and industry (population studies, business censuses, etc.) and with material designed to bridge the wide gap that exists between theoretical instruction and practice, these sections cover moments and expected values, somé variances in random sampling, a population sample for Greece, somé binomial and related distributions, the gamma and beta functions, distribution of the variance in samples from a normál universe, tests for hypotheses in normál theory, and many other topics. A page of random numbers is appended for use with the text. In addition to the illustrative examples, Dr. Deming includes well over 200 exercises, many with full solutions and most with hints to guide the reader. These exercises were chosen to illustrate basic points of sampling theory. 90 figures and 61 tables are alsó utilized. "It seems likely that for somé time to come this book will be the 'bible of sampling statisticians," Lester R. Frankéi, American Statistical Association Journal. "Important contribution to the application of statistical theory," New Technical Books, N. Y. Public Library. Corrected, unabridged republication of originál (1950) edition. Bibliographies in footnotes and at chapter ends. 61 tables. 90 figures. xix + 602pp. 53/s x 8V2. Paperbound. A DOVER EDITION DESIGNED FOR YEARS OF USE! We have made every effort to make this the best book possible. Our paper is opaque, with minimai show-through; it will not discolor or become brittle with age. Pages are sewn in signatures, in the method traditionally used for the best books, and will not drop out, as often happens with paperbacks held together with glue. Books open fiat for easy reference. The binding will not crack or split. This is a permanent book. ISBN 0-486-64684-X $14.95 in U.S.A. Vissza
