"There is virtually no experimental procedure for the invéstigation of matter that has not been used in studies of the solvent effect." This quotation from the book reflects the broad range of instrumental analytical methods discussed in the work from the viewpoint of their applicability in the study of the chemistry of solutions. Dielectrometry, IR, UV, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies, ESCA, the Mössbauer effect, and positron lifetime measurements are examples of the modern techniques described. It is shown how they may be used to provide information on the structures of solutions, the interaction between solvents and solutes, the nature of solvation and other complexation equilibria, and the kinetics and mechanisms of reactions in solution: A critical review is given of the empirical acceptor and donor solvent strength scales. Chapters in which the content can be put into laboratory practice, such as that on the purification of solvents for reliable research work, are completed with... Tovább
