This is an extremely lucid book, attempting to show that sociology, even sociological theory, can be written in plain English and that fairly abstruse ideas can be conveyed in clear jargon-free language. Two premises underlie the book. Firstly that many traditional issues of sociological theory are falsely conceived and that points of view hitherto considered opposite are in fact quite capable of synthesis. Secondly that the study of sociological theory in isolation from problems of empirical research is sterile and irrelevant. Throughout the book Mr. Mennell shows the relevance of theory to empirical research. The book is intended primarily to satisfy a need in the literature for a clear introductory textbook for undergraduate students taking courses concerned with major theoretical issues in sociology.
