LOOK AT THIS TINY MAP:
The arrowed blot represents one of the
smallest European countries - Slovenia.
Nothing more and nothing less - that is sim-
ply all there is to it.
CHICKEN
Some say that it looks like a hen. But when
you glance at it from afar, perhaps from the
Moon, it no longer resembles even just
hatched chick. You probably think that it
can show nothing of the kind you have al-
ready seen elsewhere in Europe or even in
the world.
YOU ARE WRONG!
I even dare to maintain that such diverse
beauties can be seen, within a distance of
no more than 60 miles, only in our country
and nowhere else in the entire world. And
now prove to me that I am in the wrong!
I know Slovenia very well indeed. I have
researched it lengthwise and across, visited
its gorges, waterfalls and caves, roamed its
castles and churches, and taken a close
look at numerous modern buildings and
the historical parts of its towns. When I
began to prepare this book, I was convinced
that I would have the work done with ease,
to the effect that I knew my country down
to the smallest detail.
THE TASK TURNED OUT
TO BE MORE AND MORE TOILSOME
The more I attempted to reduce the mate-
rial, the more it piled up on my table, as
there are simply too many beauties in this
part of the world. So I added another 16
pages, and yet another 16, and the little
Slovenia began to creep over all four edges
of my desk. So there was nothing else for
me to do than to add another desk.
THE EFFECT WAS BRIEF
Although with a heavy heart, I finally had to
draw a line. This was done on Tuesday, at
seven p.m.
