Géza Gárdonyi (1863-1922) was a bestselling poet, dramatist, short story writer and novelist, whose many writings are still being read, mainly by young people. His historical novels, including the perennial classic Eclipse ofthe Crescent Moon, have always been popular for their vivid reconstruction of Hungarian history and their grasp of the spirit
of times long gone. Slave ofthe Huns (1902), as its title suggests, is set in the colourful period of the Great Migrations. It recounts the adventures of a liberated young Greek slave who takes part in Attila the Hun's campaigns against the Romans as a mounted warrior,
only to be wounded himself during the savage battle on the Catalaunian Plain. And in the meantime, we are provided with a wealth of detail about life behind the scenes of history, related with utmost accuracy and an array of forcefully conceived characters.
Gárdonyi, a realist with romantic overtones, has produced here a beloved classic of Hungarian literature.
