Writing in the uncertain times of the Wars of the Roses Sir Thomas Ma-lory looked wistfully back to the days of a great king, to a dead age of chivalry, and to a national disaster wreaked by treachery. The various parts of this most famous of medieval, legends-the love of Launcelot and Guenever, the quest for the Holy Grail, the fellowship of the Round Table, the treason of Mordred - are handled by him as separate episodes: yet they are given a unity by the magic of his prose style.
In the edition of 1485, which this volume follows, it can now be seen what part Caxton played as Malory's first editor. Eight tales of earthly chivalry were welded by him into one book, to compose a story which gains strength, pace, and pathos as it moves towards the inevitable tragedy of Arthur's death.
