Russia in Flux, first published in 1941, has earned an international reputation as a definitive study of the political, intellectual, and social origins of the Russian revolution.

Sir John Maynard (1865-1943), a member of Parliament, and a member of the Fabian Society, served many years with the Indian Civil Service. Vice-chan-cellor of Lahore University, Sir John was later associated with the London School of Slavonic and East ''I European Studies. On his first visit to Russia in 1895-
1896, he witnessed the coronation of Nicholas II. His return visits in 1933, 1935, and 1937 provided the basis for Russia in Flux.
