Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
was born in Edinburgh, on May 22, 18^9; he was the nephew of 'Dickie' Doyle, the artist. He was educated at Stoneyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University. He first set up as a doctor at Southsea, and it was while he was waiting for patients that he first began to write. His subsequent world-wide fame as a writer was only one ot the many facets of a man of remarkably noble accomplishments. While all the world knows Sherlock Holmes, it is not so generally known that his creator amongst many other things wrote the History of the Boer War and England's defence of its conduct in that War. He was the first publicly to advocate the change in the Coronation Oath deleting the insult to Catholics; he was the first to warn against the shape of the U-Boat War; he advocated the Channel Tunnel; he was responsible for the steel helmet and inflatable life jacket being introduced into the Army and Navy; and he invented the wound stripe; he was a founder of... In his towering versatility he is a challenging example to ordinary mankind. He truly belongs to Literature, but he is also a national figure: a citizen of the world, and the ageless spokesman of justice and tolerance in our century.
