This edition of Singapore Perspectives deals with the triple whammy of recession, SARS, and terrorism that hit Singapore in succession. It also offers insights into the impending changes in the political leadership of Singapore.
The highlights of the conference include a presentation entitled "Seven Revolutions" by representatives from the prestigious American think tank, Center for Strategic and International Studies. The study focuses on the seven most significant forces now at work in changing the world by the year 2025.
The INSTITUTE OF POLICY STUDIES (IPS) is a think tank dedicated to fostering good governance in Singapore through strategic policy research and discussion. It is the only think tank in Singapore that focuses on Singapore's domestic developments and its external relations. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach in the analysis of Singapore-centric issues, with an emphasis on long-term strategic thinking.
The IPS has a three-fold mission:
• Analysis: To analyse policy issues of critical concern to Singapore and contribute to policy development;
• Bridge-building: To build bridges among diverse stakeholders, including government, business, academia and civil society; and
• Communication: To communicate research findings to a wider community and generate a greater awareness of policy issues.
To achieve its objectives, IPS undertakes research projects, generates publications, and organises conferences, lectures, seminars, and closed-door discussions. More details on IPS can be obtained from its website at www.ips.org.sg
The Singapore Perspectives conference, organised annually, discusses the political, social, economic and global outlook for Singapore. Each year it endeavours to provide forward-looking insights and assessments.
The editor for this issue is Arun Mahizhnan, Deputy Director of the Institute of Policy Studies.
