Here is the anguish of Hungarian Jews, anticipating and remembering the Holocaust. Part I contains the thoughts of those displaying a mixture of feelings, ranging from confidence and defiance to fear and resignation, as they awaited the inescapable tragedy; Part II has the response of the survivors as they attempt to come to grips with the bitter past and face an uncertain future.
Most of these accounts are appearing for the first time in any language other than Hungarian, and Dr. Handler has provided a sensitive introduction that places the experience of the Jews in Hungary in historical context.

Hungarian Jews were long isolated from the mainstream of European Jews by langfuage barriers, assimilation, and ideological differences. As did Jews elsewhere in Central and Western Europe, Hungarian Jews adopted the local language at the expense of Yiddish and Hebrew and became active in all aspects of national culture. The Hungarian language forms a barrier that prevents easy access to and notice from the rest of Europe, and Hungarian Jews could therefore enter the modern Jewish mainstream only by leaving Hungary. For much the same reason, the world has taken little note of the Hungarian Jewish experience in the Holocaust until very recently.
Represented here are Jews of varying social positions and professions, wide-ranging views, and diverse experiences. Some contributors — rabbis, officials, physicians, lawyers —were
