japonisme is one of the most important art books ever to be published. It is a unique view of an important influence - one that can be felt today (in the art of Jackson Pollock, for example) - and an appreciation of the beauty that East has given West.
Siegfried Wichmann has been Professor of Art History at the University of Karlsruhe, West Germany, since 1968; he previously held the post of Chief Curator at the Pinakothek in Munich. The themes of the major exhibitions he has organized in Germany include: Modern Art: The Point of Departure (1958), Secession: European Art at the Turn of the Century (1964), International Art Nouveau Glass: Modern Art in Embryo (1968) and World Cultures and Modern Art (1972).
As organizer of the German contribution to the Council of Europe exhibitions Les Sources du XXe siecle in Paris and The Romantic Movement in London, he has increasingly concerned himself with worldwide encounters and relationships in art. Since 1973 he has been President of the International Calligraphers' Association, based in Tokyo.
