Throughout the world today can be seen the gigantic stone tombs and structures of the megalith builders, which rangé from the awe-inspiring monument of Stonehenge to the vast monoliths of Easter Island. Tens of thousands of such relics are found throughout northern and western Europe and the Mediterranean—from the barren slopes of Palestine to the shores of the North Sea.
But despite their related forms all these monuments are nőt the work of a single race; they appear rather to be the giant seed of a doctrine of salvation which spread gradually from east to west from about the fourth millennium B. C. onwards. This doctrine invested the dead with an unparal-leled status and power and held the living to unremitting labour and superhuman achievements in their service and in the service of their gods.
