Shooting training is all too often a hotchpotch of friends' advice, shooting lore and limited personal experience. Michael Kemp has provided the beginner instead with a logical, step-by-step course to successful and enjoyable shooting, ensuring clarity and effectiveness by the use of short chapters and uncomplicated language. In the first section he examines particularly the different types of swing and presents a cogent and well-argued case for what he calls the 'smoke trail' method. i years of experience in the shooting field
^^ will find food for thought here. The
second section deals with guns and \ equipment, with a particularly significant
chapter on cartridges, and the last part of the book takes the reader out into the shooting field again to consider the various types of shooting and of game, and the different techniques which each requires. As well as advice on the actual shooting, guidance is given about the conventions which should be observed in each type of shoot.
Throughout the book the importance of gun safety is impressed on the reader, but the quality which shows most clearly is the author's love for the sport - he has been shooting since his childhood and is a regular contributor to the Shooting Times. The eleven line-drawings and eighteen photographs, the latter specially taken by John Marchington, serve to complement and clarify the text. There is a very useful glossary, and an index.
