Nelson TcCcCy: The Opera Years
Before he became a movie star. Nelson Eddy was an opera srar. This book is a study of rhar carccr and a compilation of virtually every review written about him from 1922 until 1933, when he arrived in Hollywood. Included are clippings from his person;il scrapbooks with liis handwritten notations and many rare photographs. Here's a sampling from the early critics:
"Nelson Eddy, as Amonasro [in Aida], had an electrifying effect on rhe audience. A young singer, scarcely 20 years of age, with rhar indefinable gift so seldom seen of arresring the auditor's interest and holding ir continuously, Mr. Eddy was a star from the moment he appeared on the stage."

"Mr. Eddy's characterization of die difficult role of Tonio was so excellent throughout that it looks as though the Civic Opera Company might already have justified its existence by ihe discovery of a real operatic talent."
"You never would have recognized Nelson Eddy all done up with whiskers and a uniform [in Pirates of Penzancej, but when he sang you knew him all right and his voice was glorious."
"Nelson Eddy, in die part of Gianni [Schicchi], undoubtedly gave the best performance of liis career."
"His efforts [as Wolfram in Taiwhaitsei] stirred his hearers to continued hand-clapping which subsided only after he had 'stepped our of character' in order to how two or three times. Horrified Wagncritcs trembled for fear that there might be an attempt to force an encore in violation of all tradition."
"Nelson Eddy won still more laurels as Marcello [in La Bobeme], both his acting and singing being irresistibly excellent."
"Nelson liddy, the ever-popular, was Gunthcr [in GotterdHmeruns^. His makeup was perfect, matching his vocal accomplishments."
"His breadi-control is phenomenal, amounting to little less than sheer exhibitionism at
times."
"He sings with no apparenr effort, has excellent control and perfeci diction."
"Nelson liddy crearcd a furor. His personality, musicianship, interpretation, and above all, his voice — were fauldess."
"Mr. Eddy, with every gift the kindlv gods can present to a mere mortal, will become one of the greatest, most justly famed of American singers."
A bonus chapter includes leaner re MacDonald's opera career (1943-45), plus coverage of their operatic scenes in film, the lost Toica Act II from May time and a movie script written by Nelson on the life of Feodor Chaliapin.
