These essays for the 400th anniversary
of Shakespeare's birth are linked by the
common point of view 'that the best
way to emphasize the value of Shake-
speare in our changing world is to see
him in his'. The contributors lay a
common stress on the humanism of
Shakespeare and-although not all of
them would describe themselves without
qualification as Marxists - on the value
of the Marxist historical method for
discovering the sources of that
humanism. The twelve essays are
independent and no sort of 'ortho-
doxy' is aimed at; but, as the editor
says, 'the Shakespeare honoured here
is, above all, a writer who, in the
complex ways of art, helps men and
women to understand what it means to
be a man or woman and hence to affect
and change the world'.
