The study of microorganisms, bacteria, and bacterial viruses has made major contributions in modern genetics toward the understanding of the nature of the genetic material and the mechanism of its action in molecular terms. In the establishment and development of bacterial genetics, sexual phenomena in bacteria have provided a primary tool. In this monograph two major contributions to progress in this field give a detailed account of sexual processes in bacteria. They alsó describe somé of the main advances in the understanding of bacterial physiology and genetics made by the study of bacterial conjugation. For example, they analyze the genetic determinism of lysogeny, by which process a virus may become an integrated part of the host chromosome in bacteria.
