The Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) is a center for learning and innovation that advances humán rights principles by stimulating the development of a public interest law infrastructure. Columbia Law School launched PILI in 1997 with the support of the Ford Foundation. In 2002 PILI established its new headquarters in Budapest and opened an office in Moscow the following year. A wide variety of information and resources relating to public interest law, including a rangé of publications, can be found on PILI's website: www.pili.org. This publication has been produced within PILI's NGO Advocacy Program, which provides training to NGOaffiliated legal professionals and activists in order to assist them in developing their public interest advocacy skills. In the field of training and education, PILI's other program priorities include the development of clinical legal education at university law faculties and a Public Interest Law Fellows Program.
