During his career of original research in
physics extending over 40 years, Cecil
Powell made notable contributions in fields
ranging from the condensation of steam,
the cloud chamber, ionic mobilities and
seismology to nuclear and elementary par-
ticle physics. His greatest contributions
were his development of the photographic
emulsion as a quantitative tool for investi-
gations of nuclear physics and the elemen-
tary particles and his application of it,
together with his collaborators, to the dis-
covery of the 7r-meson and the charged
K mesons, For this work he was awarded

the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1950,
Always interested in problems of the im-
pact of science on society, he came in his
later life to be recognised as a leading
figure in various movements among scien-
tists concerned with these problems. The
speeches he made and articles he wrote
in his capacity as President of the World
Federation of Scientific Workers, as Chair-
man of the Continuing Committee of the
Pu g was h Movement and as Chairman of
the Scientific Policy Committee of CERN
reveal a deep sincerity, a ready humour,
and a command of the English language
unrivalled among writers on scientific
themes.
This volume contains his unfinished autobio-
graphy and a tribute from V, F. Weisskopf,
together with a selection of his most im-
portant scientific papers and a number of
his public speeches and addresses on the
social implications of science.
