The Historical Gallery is a fine art
collection housed in the Hungarian
National Museum. As its name sug-
gests, the Gallery contains works of
historic interest and includes portraits
of important people and representa-
tions of significant events. In fact, the
paintings, drawings, engravings, litho-
graphs and photographs in the collec-
tion form a real treasure trove for
those who are interested in the past
of Hungary.
The pictures in the Historical Gal-
lery are by artists of various national-
ities. Before the nineteenth century
it was mainly Austrian, German,
Italian or Netherlandish masters who

No matter how valuable it is, the
collection is known by relatively few
people. This book, by György Rózsa,
the head of the Historical Gallery, is
the first serious attempt at offering a
comprehensive view of this collection,
outstanding from a cultural history
point of view.
Illustrated by 55 plates, the book
gives a detailed description of each
work represented.
