Joseph Conrad (Jozef Teodor Nalecz Korzeniowski) was born in 1857 near Berdichev in the Polish Ukraine. His father became involved in revolutionary politics, and in 1862 Poland's Tsarist overlords sent the family to exile in the harsh northern
climate of Vologda in Russia, where / ¦ Conrad's mother died. Seven years later Conrad's father, impoverished but now permitted to travel, died at Cracow and Jozef
became the ward of his maternal uncle, Tadeusz Bobrowski. The 12-year-old boy was fortunate in his guardian, who cared for him for 25 years and once took him on a holiday to the Black Sea. Conrad, a boy in exile, had read the sea stories of Captain Marryat and they left a powerful impression on the mind
of this child of a land-locked country; he wanted to go to sea. As the son of a political convict he was liable to compulsory service in the Russian army, and Uncle Tadeusz sent him to Marseilles to become an apprentice
