hope that we can find wholeness, happiness, and harmony, which is after all the
fulfillment of his plan for humanity.
Jonatlian Kozol, author, Amazing Grace
Seeking Peace is a tough, transcendent envisioning of peace: neither fatuous
nor sentimental, but arduous and courageous. Arnold writes in the tradition of
the Berrigans, of Simone Weil and Thomas Merton. Activists of all stripes,
even those who think themselves agnostics, ought not to ignore this book.

Everybody talks about peace, even as they prepare for war. This is a book that
talks about peace in a way that prepares us to make it happen.
Imam Mukammed Gemea'ak, The Islamic Cultural Center of New York
Arnold's newest book is an excellent work, and aids in promoting ideas I fully
support. Seeking Peace is the very essence of what we are all about.
Brotker David Steindl-Rast, Mount Saviour Monastery
Arnold speaks out of a living tradition of radical response to the challenge of
one whose very name is Peace. There is living water here for gasping fish.
Jesse L. Jackson, The Rainbow/PUSH Coalition
A splendid book drawing on the rich experiences of the author and on relevant
observations by legendary activists and writers A valuable contribution to
contemporary thought, and a guide for action as the struggle continues.
SEEKING PEACE
Johann Christoph Arnold
PEACE HAS NOTHING TO DO with
passivity or resignation. It is not for the
spineless or self-absorbed, or for those con-
tent with a quiet life. Peace demands that we
live honestly before God, before others, and
in the light of our own conscience. It does not-
come without the burden of duty, for it de-
mands deeds of love.
Peace is a relentless pursuit kept up only with
hope and courage, vision and commitment.
Thus the search for it cannot be a selfish one.
It cannot be merely a question of finding ful-
fillment, achieving closure, or, as Aristotle put
it, actualizing our human potential. No! To
seek peace means to seek harmony within our-
selves, with others, and wi th G oci.
from the book
Seeking Peace, Arnold's fifth book, explores
many facets of humankind's ageless search for
peace. It plumbs a wealth of spiritual traditions
and draws on the wisdom of some exceptional
(and some very ordinary) people who have
found peace in surprising places.
Seeking Peace may not dispense popular wis-
dom, yet it is sure to satisfy a deep hunger.
Arnold offers no easy solutions, but also no
unrealistic promises. He spells out what peace
demands. There is a peace greater than self-
fulfillment, he writes, a peace greater than na-
tions no longer at war. But you won't find it if
you go looking for it in a self-centered way.
This peace comes first to those who are ready
to "die to self."
