This illustrated travel guide telis something of the history of New Zealand as well as showing the traveller the country in a most revealing way. The tour explores all corners of New Zealand from Cape Reinga in the north to Slewart Island in the south. Its purpose is to show visitors and intending travellers—including New Zealanders—the towns, cities, and varied scenery of this extraordinary country.
The author begins his tour in the capital city, Wellington, heads north to the Wairarapa, moves into the rich and fertile Hawke's Bay area, and thence to the place where Captain Cook spént somé time, Poverty Bay and the East Coast. The road takes him through the thermal area and the Bay of Plenty, on to Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, and then further north through kauri forests and country rich in Maori history. Cape Reinga, the country's northernmost point, sends us south via the rich Waikato and the world-famous Wai-tomo Caves, through the King Country and then into fertile Taranaki. .Continuing roughly south, the road takes us to the Wanganui district and the Tongariro National Park region, passing through the Rangitikei, Manawatu, and Horowhenua districts before arriving back in Wellington.
The tour now crosses Cook Strait to Marl-borough, down the Kaikoura Coast to Christ-church and the rolling Canterbury Plains, through to Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand, and on to the downlands of North Otago, through Central Otago, and on to the pastoral country of Southland. A short trip takes us to Stewart Island, the southernmost point of the journey.
Next we travel through the magnificent Fiord-land and Southern Lakes areas and then into the fabled gold country of Central Otago, and over the Haast Pass into South Westland. Continuing through Westland, we pass the beautiful glaciers and lakes of that area before entering the Nelson Province and ending our tour at Cape Farewell.
The 220 colour illustrations specially taken for this book make up the most comprehensive collection of photographs of New Zealand at present available in published form. Vissza
