f There is todaya widespread, and growing, interest in the visual arts- in spite oforperhaps because of, the increasing domination of our life and thought by technology and science. Yetthe appreciation of these arts comes spontaneously to few people and no one can appreciate the who/e rangé without help and training. This series aims at p rövid ing a practical, i/lustrated guide to appreciation, which is here regarded as a skill which can be deve/oped from a natural aptitude, ratherthan as something which can be reduced to a set ofrules or taught, far less culled from picture books and histories of art. The emphasis is on what to look for in the various kinds ofart, on the development of an intelligent and critical approach, andabove all on the necessity of exercising ourperceptivepowers: it is only through constant training and use of these powers that we can arrive at a true understanding and enjoyment of works ofart.
