Yetthe appreciation of these arts comes spontaneously to few people and no one can appreciate the who/e rangé without help and training. This series aims at p rövid ing a practical, i/lustrated guide to appreciation, which is here regarded as a skill which can be deve/oped from a natural aptitude, ratherthan as something which can be reduced to a set ofrules or taught, far less culled from picture books and histories of art.
