'Without trees the world would be a bleak place for man and beast alike,' states the author in his introduction to this book. Many of us tend to take trees for granted, however, perhaps beeause they are such an integrál part of the world in which we live. It is more than 3000 millión years since the first primitive plants appeared on our planet, and it took more than 2500 millión years before plants were able to conquer the land. This was the turning point in the evolution of life on Earth, and trees continued to evolve into the rich diversity of species we see around us today.
