The Christian Bible has a unique place in the history of the book. Before the advent of printing in die West no text was so firequendy revered by the faithful, laboured over by scribes and illuminators, studied by scholars and coveted by the rich and powerful. Comparing the unique handwritten artefact with today's mass-produced printed Bible, British Library experts, Drs Scot McKendrick and Kathleen Doyle, highlight both parallels and distinctions - in form and content, image and word - sketching the sophistication of calligraphy, illumination and production.
Examining over 140 fine examples, the authors explore the rich diversity of style, format and function - ranging from Byzantine to Anglo-Saxon, from the great one-volume pandects produced for monastic devotion to die pocket Bibles carried by missionary monks and friars.
