Scarman Centre
The Scarman Centre for the Study of Public Order was founded at the
University of Leicester in 1987 to undertake research and postgraduate
teaching in the study of public order7 policing and social control, crime
and punishment, security and risk management, and in related fields.
The CSPO has established itself as a vibrant centre of research and
scholarship and since 1990 has been awarded research funding of over
L1 million. Current research, which is funded by a variety of public and
private organisations, includes police, crime and justice in Europe, local
strategies for crime control, crime at work, identity cards, private detectives,
the use of drugs, law and order issues, women in prison, and race relations.
Five postgraduate degrees are taught at the Centre and three MSc degrees
may be studied by distance learning. There is also a large PhD programme,
with students conducting research on topics ranging from public order
policing to insurance...

policing to insurance fraud, and race, the media and riots to public order
and urban policy. There are currently over 120 students working in the
Centre with a further 340 studying distance-learning MSc degrees.
The Centre has excellent specialist library and computing facilities. Lord
Scarman is Chair of the Advisory Board and other practitioners are
involved in teaching and research activities.
This booklet gives a brief outline of the Centre's current activities,
including work with practitioners, dissemination and publications,
international collaboration and co-operation with European partners.
