THE THE DESERT
Ever since the earUest artist-explorers journeyed into the interior, the Australian desert has held a special fascination for artists. A region of stark contrasts, alternating dramatically between parched barrenness and ephemeral lushness, the desert was unknown for thousands of years to all save its Aboriginal inhabitants.
Threatening, compelling and mystical, the desert is revealed here through the work of some of the principal artists who have journeyed to encounter and interpret Australia's most challenging image. Ludwig Becker, S. T. Gill and Edward Charles Frome accurately recorded the forbidding landscape they explored. Hans Heysen was among the earliest to be beguiled by its majesty, immensity and technical problems of interpretation.
Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker, Clifton Pugh, Lloyd Rees and Sam Fullbrook, in pursuing their individual interpretations, evoked a desert imagery for their coastal dwelling contemporaries.... Tovább

Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker, Clifton Pugh, Lloyd Rees and Sam Fullbrook, in pursuing their individual interpretations, evoked a desert imagery for their coastal dwelling contemporaries. Stanislaus Rapotec and Jon Molvig added further emotional facets to desert imagery. By contrast, Henri Bastin and Sam Byrne saw the desert with a child-like vision. For John Wolseley and Tim Storrier the desert landscape, accessible today by air and land, offers not only scope to pursue the multi-dimensional approach, but continued fascination with its mystique.
To their description and interpretation of these artists and their work, Sandra McGrath and John Olsen bring that same keen enthusiasm that has inspired many of the artists discussed in the book in their quest for the essence of the 'soul' place of Australia.
