Acclaimed as 'our greatest traditional Aboriginal artist' (The Australian 14/10/71), Yirawala was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1971. in the same year he won the International Co-operation Art Award. His work is considered to be of great artistic merit, possessing a strange, intricate beauty and a warm composition of white, black, browns, ochres, and reds-the colours of his land. These paintings are an invaluable part of the Aboriginal culture of western Arnhem Land, and of Australian heritage, forming as they do a source of reference on the laws, legends, and spiritual beliefs of the originál Australians. Yirawala, sometimes given as 'Yirwala,' is a prestigious leader of his people, quite apart from his importance as an Australian artist. It is indeed tragic that he may never paint again due to age and advancing blindness.
