Perched on the hills above the often mist-
enshrouded Golden Gate Bridge lies the
colourful and cosmopolitan city of San
Francisco. It appears as a mass of white
buildings, crowned by several skyscrapers,
that cling to the hillsides and sweep down to
the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
The city dates from 1776 and it was a
trading post in 1846, when it was captured by
United States forces during a war with
Mexico. In 1906 an earthquake almost
completely destroyed it but it was
subsequently rebuilt into one of the loveliest
cities in the world. One of San Francisco's
greatest natural assets is its fine natural
harbour, and it is a busy port with strong
trading links with Australia and the Far East.
San Francisco has twenty-one hills plied by
the famous cable-cars. Nob Hill, where in
earlier days rich people lived in ostentatious
mansions, is probably the best known. Today
the mansions have gone, and in their place
there are towering hotels and apartment
blocks.... Tovább

the famous cable-cars. Nob Hill, where in

mansions, is probably the best known. Today
the mansions have gone, and in their place
there are towering hotels and apartment
blocks. At the bottom of the hill is Union
Square, where elegant and sophisticated
shops are situated and close by is the
fascinating China Town area, which has the
largest Chinese settlement outside the Orient
and which contains some of the finest
restaurants in America.
It is said that many people leave their
hearts in San Francisco. The superb colour
photographs of the beautiful city in this
lavishly illustrated book will surely make it
easy to understand why. Vissza
