San Diego Then and Now pairs archival
photographs with modern views of the same scene
to illustrate the city's growth since these humble
beginnings. It shows how the city's architecture still
reflects and preserves its Spanish heritage but also
incorporates modern glass skyscrapers, Victorian-
influenced mansions, and the funky surfer shacks of
the 1960s. The book features popular places such as
the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Mission Valley, and
Point Loma, and it shows the mudflats and sand
spits of the 1800s that are now home to SeaWorld.
The Embarcadero, San Diego's original dockside,
has also seen dramatic change—wharves and
warehouses have given way to a New England-
style village that offers a sparkling view of the
city's downtown. This is a
fascinating look at change
and preservation in one of
America's most beautiful
coastal areas.
