You don't have to live in the Adirondacks to enjoy furniture and decorative accessories made of tree liinbs, twigs, bark, antlers, and other products of the forest and field. Outdoor and indoor rustic furniture of all kinds has found a welcome place in homes across America for generations. Each region of the country has its own variants of Rustic Style, from bent-cypress settees of the Deep South, to fine hickory pieces originating in Indiana, to steerhide-covered lodgepole pine armchairs of the West.
Much of this furniture was made in the last century and early in the twentieth century by such famous names as Reverend Ben Davis of North Carolina, Thomas Canada Molesworth of Wyoming, and Raymond W. Overholzer of Michigan, but not all of it is antique. As author Ralph Kylloe reveals in this, his sixth book on the subject, dozens of first-rate contemporary makers, including Doug Tedrow, Lestor Santos, Peter Winter, and Barney and Susan Bellinger, are crafting a wide variety of...
As author Ralph Kylloe reveals in this, his sixth book on the subject, dozens of first-rate contemporary makers, including Doug Tedrow, Lestor Santos, Peter Winter, and Barney and Susan Bellinger, are crafting a wide variety of rustic household furnishings—from beds and armoires to dining room sets, from easy chairs, desks, and storage chests to all manner of other comfortable, durable household objects that offer a distinct flavor of the outdoors. Rustic Style, after all, depends on the use of natural materials close to their original form, and part of its charm is the way in which it brings nature indoors. In addition to wood, of course, many other natural materials are used: rattan, rush, or leather thongs may be crafted to weave seat backs and bottoms; antlers that are seasonally shed by animals such as elk and deer find use as table legs, arms of chandeliers, and other delicate linear forms; birch and other bark may be found covering the flat surfaces of chests, headboards, and desks; even tiny lengths of twigs may become mosaic patterns on all sorts of wooden furniture.
All this and more is covered in Ralph Kylloe's breezy, informal text accompanied by his own crisp color photographs of a wide variety of homes across the land. Living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, porches, dens, and studies are revealed in all their colorful glory, each corner replete with rustic furniture of past and present along with such decorative accessories as pack baskets, fishing creels, canoe paddles, snowshoes, and skis, and many other authentic, small-scale adjuncts to this decorative style. Here are ideas for the homeowner, decorator, architect, and collector. Most of the photographs are of room settings rather than individual pieces, so decorating tips and grouping arrangements are an added benefit throughout the book. At the back, a source list of makers and dealers provides the reader with specific guidance on where to find the best materials and makers for Rustic Style decorating today.
