warm and green in summer, white and glittering
in winter. Did we say "quiet"? Hardly true. You see,
the town has this postmaster, Hugh Smith-Regan,
who sleeps under a folded American flag and who
keeps plaster flamingos, ducks, and rabbits on the
public lawn. He steams open all incoming and out-
going mail (and judiciously edits the contents),
has been married to five voluptuous women, steals
cars to meet the mail train, and he commands a
motley brigade of patriotic citizens who crave live
ammo and subsequently invade the hostile village
of Pumpkin Hollow.

Victory Among the Insane is a crazy, hilarious
satire that tangles with God, the United States
Post Office, patriotism, and sex with style and
verve. Perhaps, as one critic suggested, it should
be called "Catch-22 Visits New Hampshire." Per-
haps it is simply "victory among the insane."
